Transforming U.S. Workforce Development Policies for the 21st Century
The Heldrich Center and the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta and Kansas City collaborated on a project that featured a national conference and an edited book.
National Conference. Transforming U.S. Workforce Development Policies for the 21st Century, sponsored by the Federal Reserve Banks of Atlanta and Kansas City and the Heldrich Center, was held October 15-17, 2014.
Workforce development and labor market issues have come to the forefront as the nation continues its recovery from the Great Recession. Over 60 national experts shared perspectives on transformative education and workforce development strategies and policies to:
- Improve opportunities for job seekers, students, and workers, especially those who face the greatest difficulties in the labor market
- Meet the needs of employers and society for a highly skilled, well-educated, competitive, and productive workforce
- Deliver effective and efficient solutions that can be adopted by federal, state, or local/regional governments as well as by educational institutions, businesses, and nonprofit organizations.
More than 250 workforce development providers, postsecondary educators, policymakers, community-based organizations, researchers, lenders, the philanthropic community, and students attended the conference.
Edited Book. The book assembled an array of authors to address education and workforce development strategies and policies to improve opportunities for job seekers, meet the needs of employers, and improve the effectiveness of workforce development programs. The book was edited by Todd Greene formerly of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Tammy Edwards of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, and Dr. Carl Van Horn of the Heldrich Center.
