Economic and Job Sector Analysis

Heldrich Center researchers are well-versed in analyzing economic conditions and job sectors, both regionally and nationally. Using quantitative methods with the New Jersey Statewide Data System, publicly available administrative data from the U.S. Census and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and labor economics technologies like Lightcast. Most analyses are supplemented with qualitative research methods to verify and expand the findings to illustrate and contextualize trends that further clarify the data.

The Heldrich Center is currently conducting a process evaluation of Middlesex County, New Jersey’s current healthcare workforce development plans and programs and will develop a strategic plan for the development and implementation of innovative workforce development initiatives. The Center will conduct a series of research and technical assistance activities, including a landscape assessment of the healthcare workforce in Middlesex County.

The Heldrich Center is currently conducting an in-depth examination to understand the impact and influence of artificial intelligence on the technology and life sciences sector workforces in New Jersey for the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. The project’s two overarching research objectives are to establish a baseline understanding of the workforce characteristics and changing dynamics of the technology and life sciences sectors in New Jersey and to understand how artificial intelligence is affecting occupational demand and skill requirements for occupations in these sectors and predict how likely artificial intelligence is to affect them in the future.

The Heldrich Center, in partnership with the Built Environment and Green Building Group at the Center for Urban Policy Research, recently conducted a study to better understand and document community needs and areas for growth in training, recruiting, hiring, and retaining students, trainees, and workers from diverse backgrounds for the state’s energy-efficiency workforce; and to produce strategies for improving workforce development infrastructure for stakeholders to consider.
