Seeking Work in South Jersey Workforce Access Project

December 2024

Under the South Jersey Workforce Access project, Heldrich Center researchers used a mixed-methods approach to better understand and document the labor force landscape in southern New Jersey and barriers that job seekers and hiring managers face. The project included analyses of labor market information, Census data, and other publicly available data sources that provided insights into the characteristics and experiences of southern New Jersey residents. The project also included qualitative data collection through focus groups with businesses and individual interviews with job seekers. The project resulted in four deliverables: two reports summarizing the focus groups and interviews, and two online data stories describing the labor market landscapes of southern New Jersey and the city of Camden. Findings highlight opportunities to bridge divides and better meet the needs of both job seekers and employers through better partnerships, more flexible hiring practices, and increased access to training.
