In 2020, the immense upheaval and turmoil in the labor market prompted the Heldrich Center to rethink what constituted job seeker support and how virtual interaction could foster a sense of community. With these ideas in mind, researchers created the New Jersey Career Network Job Seeker Community, an online home for New Jersey job seekers looking for help and support along their unemployment journey. The community was designed to allay the far-reaching challenges and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, employing more holistic supports that touched on the needs of the whole person dealing with job loss, physical isolation, shame, and fear, just to name a few.

A new Heldrich Center research brief by Liana Volpe and Savannah Barnett examines the mission and structure of the community, its approaches and activities, observations from community members, and lessons researchers have learned about job seeker needs and supports.

The Suddenly Virtual series began in March 2020 at the start of the global pandemic when public workforce staff were suddenly forced into virtual operations. Suddenly Virtual explores how the public workforce system responded to COVID-19 and the need to offer virtual services through remote teams. The series offers technological tools, tips, and strategies that could be employed by the public workforce system to reach virtual customers more efficiently and effectively. Through multi-state surveys, roundtable discussions, and other direct contact with the field, researchers wrote and published issue briefs, blog posts, and toolkits to quickly share what is happening in the field and identify challenges, opportunities, and recommendations for immediate action.

Suddenly Virtual is a series of 4 issue briefs, 3 toolkits, and 11 Medium blog posts, supported by an online Community of Practice, which aims to provide additional online professional development opportunities for public workforce system staff.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to take an unprecedented toll on the economy and society at large, creating individual, family, and community challenges on a scale never seen before. The pandemic has necessitated extensive changes in the services needed at this time, as well as how those services are delivered to people in need. With the real unemployment rate at about 10% and 10 million Americans still out of work, community-wide responses will be necessary to provide adequate, ongoing support for unemployed workers.

In July 2020, the Heldrich Center a brief examining the suddenly virtual transition of every One-Stop and/or American Job Center in the region. Recognizing the central role that libraries play in community life, Heldrich Center researchers have now turned their attention to public libraries and how they have pivoted to virtual services, with a particular focus on the resources available to support the unemployed and their physical, social, emotional, and job search needs.
