The research looks to review the current — and inadequate — landscape for worker adjustment transition assistance in the United States. It also seeks to explore what the United States can learn from other countries, as well as from promising state, local, nonprofit, or private-sector initiatives. The Heldrich Center performs a calculation and analysis of training provider performance data in order to assess and prepare this information for display on the online New Jersey Consumer Report Card System (<a href="http://www.njtrainingsystems.org">www.njtrainingsystems.org</a>). The Heldrich Center uses state administrative data from NJLWD and NJDOE on program completers/exiters and matches them against New Jersey Unemployment Insurance wage information and Wage Record Interchange System information to calculate performance levels at three levels: the provider level, the cluster level, and the CIP code level. In 2012, the State of New Jersey was awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Education to strengthen its collaborative efforts by linking various education and workforce data to form a more seamless view of the state’s P-20W landscape. Federal resources were used to establish an advisory council, expand the existing New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development Workforce Longitudinal Data System (WLDS) into a P-20W State Longitudinal Data System (now known as the New Jersey Statewide Data System, or NJSDS) to house new workforce and post-secondary data administrative data as well as K-12 data, create policies to govern a shared data resource for the benefit of state government, link the various state administrative datasets using data from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, conduct public events on the data system, develop a public-facing <a href="https://njsds.nj.gov" target="_blank">NJSDS website</a>, and begin the process of conducting research using the data in the new data system. NJ CAN is a comprehensive college and career readiness web-based resource that allows students to take personal assessments and career and interest inventories to better understand themselves and navigate their educational experiences in middle school, high school, and postsecondary education. Students can research colleges and postsecondary training and education and compare them based on their personal preferences in order to make informed decisions about their future. They can also research careers based on a vast library of occupational profiles that are updated annually. Teachers can use the index of lesson plans and activities to implement the New Jersey Common Core State Standards for career and technical education. Together with NJDOE, the Heldrich Center collects user feedback to make New Jersey-specific enhancements and improvements to the website each year. Specifically, New Jersey students can research state and local financial aid opportunities that are available to New Jersey students only. Over the course of the next two years, the Heldrich Center will continue to work with NJDOE and schools to improve the site, help counselors and teachers implement NJ CAN more integrally into their day-to-day activities to ease administrative tasks, and to help personalize students' educational planning and decision-making.
