The center’s evaluations used a telephone survey of companies receiving a grant, a telephone survey of individuals receiving training funded by a grant, and extensive in-depth site visits to determine the effect of the Customized Training program on individual companies and their employees. The research team employed a diverse array of methodologies, including site visits to study school districts, analysis of program data, telephone surveys of parents, and surveys of district and school personnel, to determine how well the programs have improved parental involvement as well as how the programs might be strengthened. The report examined the vast array of education and training options at postsecondary institutions, employers, and community-based organizations, and the resources available to help older workers make informed selections. It reviewed education and training financing options that may be available to older workers. Emerging trends in education and training that may benefit older workers were also highlighted. The Heldrich Center performs a calculation and analysis of training provider performance data in order to assess and prepare this information for display on the online New Jersey Consumer Report Card System (<a href="http://www.njtrainingsystems.org">www.njtrainingsystems.org</a>). The Heldrich Center uses state administrative data from NJLWD and NJDOE on program completers/exiters and matches them against New Jersey Unemployment Insurance wage information and Wage Record Interchange System information to calculate performance levels at three levels: the provider level, the cluster level, and the CIP code level. Using multiple longitudinal datasets and cross-sectional data, as well as educational data (tests, surveys), the study examined changes in supply of STEM students and demand for STEM workers since the 1970s. The study generated several key findings. U.S. schools at both secondary and postsecondary levels are producing a supply of STEM students that meet and probably exceed demand. Tests, such as PISA, TIMSS, and NAEP, show U.S. students improving their math, science, and overall academic performance over the past four decades; that is, year-over-year performance that shows steady and significant improvement in all subjects and, importantly, the amount of math and science course taking. Examining student cohorts beginning in the 1970s to 2000, the study found that the overall flow of students with math- and science-related skills who are choosing and staying in those fields has remained strong. However, high-achieving students appear to be choosing careers other than STEM because they seemed to regard math- and science-focused careers as less attractive than other options, such as business, health care, and law. One in five attended graduate or professional school and 12% were unemployed or underemployed. <em>Unfulfilled Expectations</em> showed that while satisfied with their decision to complete a four-year degree, a large percentage of survey respondents reported that they were struggling to find full-time, permanent jobs with benefits that would lead to fulfilling careers. <em>Left Out</em> explored high school graduates’ experience with job searches, job satisfaction, how well they felt prepared to enter the labor market or attend college, and their perspective on their own financial futures. Only 3 in 10 high school graduates were employed full time and the majority viewed their first job as just something to get them started rather than the first step on a career pathway. In <em>Making the Grade</em>, Americans expressed their views on how well schools, colleges, and universities were performing, what changes would improve education, and who is responsible for ensuring students learn the skills they need to work.
