At this unique moment, technology may be able to assist with customer-facing job duties in ways that workforce professionals have not considered or needed prior to the pandemic, which forced extensive operational changes at the local level.</p> <p>One area where frontline staff may want to seek alternatives is using online scheduling services to more efficiently arrange customer appointments. Online scheduling services can eliminate much of the time-consuming back and forth via phone or email when trying to make and/or change customer appointments. This frees up staff time to focus on more customer-facing, value-added tasks.</p> <p>Online appointment scheduling services are technology tools that allow customers to schedule, reschedule, and cancel appointments through a web interface, without the need for staff assistance or involvement. If applied in the public workforce system, scheduling services could allow customers to schedule appointments with their career counselors in real time, with most of these technologies offering 24/7 web access via a computer or mobile device. The first brief, <em>Older and Out of Work: Trends in Older Worker Displacement</em> (September 2008), explored the impact and scope of unemployment and worker dislocation on older Americans, in particular those who need to work for economic reasons. Three-quarters of these individuals have been unemployed over a year, and half of them are over the age of 45. The public workforce system provides few services targeted specifically to the needs of older, long-term unemployed job seekers. Additionally, reliable, unbiased information for job seekers can be hard to find. Many employers are reluctant to hire these individuals, even when job seekers have the requisite skills and experiences.</p> <p>In 2015, the Heldrich Center launched the New Start Career Network, an initiative to assist New Jersey’s long-term unemployed to reenter the workforce. Led by the Heldrich Center in collaboration with over 25 organizations, including private-sector employers, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and a network of volunteer career coaches. The New Start Career Network provided — free of charge — job search, résumé, and interviewing tools; job coaching; and training opportunities with employers. A variety of research methodologies were used to prepare the report. The center conducted eight focus groups with dislocated workers in both urban and rural regions, and conducted structured interviews with human resources executives, outplacement executives, and state workforce administrators and Rapid Response practitioners. In addition, the center conducted a telephone survey of dislocated workers to identify the types of services they received and the types of agencies they used.
