These programs included an ongoing summer program for high school students in Newark, New Jersey; a grant program that provided funding to a wide variety of youth education and development programs in New Jersey; and a national grant program that funded multi-cultural awareness programs for high school students. Working closely with the foundation’s staff, the Heldrich Center developed a common evaluation framework and strategy to provide the foundation with information that it needed to make informed decisions about its grant programs and individual grantees. The strategy included pre- and post-participation surveys for youth, interviews with program staff and stakeholders, and in-depth site visits to selected programs. The research team employed a diverse array of methodologies, including site visits to study school districts, analysis of program data, telephone surveys of parents, and surveys of district and school personnel, to determine how well the programs have improved parental involvement as well as how the programs might be strengthened. The evaluation included interviews with staff, focus groups with students and tutors, and participant observation. The center produced several reports with timely feedback for the college. The program’s goal was to boost students’ motivation, their sense of self-efficacy, and other attitudes associated with positive academic and life outcomes. The center conducted a process evaluation of the program’s implementation, based on surveys, interviews, and focus groups. Through the grant, The Workplace built partnerships with employers, GLBT-serving organizations, disability-serving organizations, and the workforce system to help GLBT people with disabilities become employed. Through the evaluation, the Heldrich Center generated actionable information on the implementation of the individual project services designed to enable the evaluators to assess the overall effectiveness of Add Us In’s effort to improve vocational services for GLBT persons with disabilities. Specifically, three research questions guided the evaluation: (1) Which of the project services have worked well and which have not been as effective in improving services for GLBT individuals? (2) In what ways can the services be modified during the course of their implementation to maximize their effectiveness?
