The John J. Heldrich Center managed the New Start Career Network from 2015 through 2022, which provided free assistance to more than 6,000 long-term unemployed New Jersey job seekers over the age of 45. This privately funded program offered free access to digital job search tools, webinars, employer engagement, job fairs, and virtual career coaching.

Additionally, from 2020 through 2023, the Heldrich Center partnered with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development and New Jersey Office of Innovation to host the New Jersey Career Network (NJCN) Job Seeker Community, which served to improve virtual career assistance services for job seekers in the state of New Jersey. The NJCN Job Seeker Community was a free online resource hub which offered materials to support the job search for people searching for work in the state of New Jersey. Aside from having access to free resource materials, this virtual hub also allowed job seekers to connect with other people who were looking for jobs as well as with NJCN’s volunteer coaching network. The NJCN Job Seeker Community was staffed by Heldrich Center staff as well a dedicated group of volunteer career coaches who generously offered their time, support, listening ears, and much more, to Community members.

While both of these projects have sunsetted, respective community members continue to remain active through a volunteer-managed LinkedIn group.*

As the public workforce system continues to redefine and refine remote service delivery, many local workforce areas are converting their traditional in-person workshop content on job search skills into recorded PowerPoints they post to the Internet. For many job seekers, this can be overwhelming, providing them with too much information to absorb at a time when they are already stressed by information overload. Microlearning — a strategy that breaks longer content into smaller, hyper-focused lessons — offers an alternative approach that staff can use to deliver job search skill development programming.

A new blog post by Amanda Bombino and Liana Volpe examines the concept and benefits of microlearning. It also provides detailed descriptions of two microlearning strategies — audiovisual media-based microlearning and interactive microlearning — and the technology tools that support microlearning strategy development and delivery. Readers should note that the Heldrich Center is not endorsing any of the proprietary products mentioned in the blog post.

Between 2007 and 2009, the Heldrich Center worked with the Brain Injury Association of New Jersey and its partners to evaluate a pilot service delivery model that addresses the unique needs of people with brain injuries and improves their potential for a positive return to work. This model, established as part of the Improving Employment Outcomes for People with Brain Injuries program, was evaluated by Heldrich Center researchers to inform the development of three additional project partner collaboratives. The center's initial evaluation activities looked to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the existing model and make recommendations for its improvement. This information was used to improve the model as well as inform the development of new collaboratives within New Jersey. Later evaluation efforts included measuring the effectiveness of the model toward moving individuals with brain injuries to employment.

In 2013 and 2014, the Heldrich Center conducted an evaluation of Platform to Employment, an initiative of The WorkPlace, the Workforce Investment Board for southwestern Connecticut. Through Platform to Employment, The Workplace offers assistance to long-term unemployed individuals, especially those who have exhausted extended Unemployment Insurance benefits, to help them prepare for returning to work. The model recognizes that extreme long-term unemployment can take a devastating toll on job seekers’ psychological state, rendering many virtually unemployable, and incorporates an emphasis on mental health counseling. It also includes opportunities for subsidized work experience with employers that have committed to participating in this effort to reduce long-term unemployment. With funding from the AARP Foundation, The WorkPlace adapted the model to serve a group of older job seekers who have been disproportionately represented among the long-term unemployed. The Heldrich Center documented the program and evaluated the part of the effort that focused on older job seekers.

From 2008 to 2010, the Heldrich Center prepared several briefs for the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College exploring older worker unemployment. The first brief, Older and Out of Work: Trends in Older Worker Displacement (September 2008), explored the impact and scope of unemployment and worker dislocation on older Americans, in particular those who need to work for economic reasons. The second brief, Older and Out of Work: Employer, Government and Nonprofit Assistance (October 2008), examined employer, federal, state, and community-based strategies targeted to helping older job seekers gain new skills and return to work.
