Heather Allen is a Program Coordinator at the Heldrich Center where she focuses on monitoring projects and grants in the Research and Evaluation program as well as on events and communications for the center, including the New Start Career Network. Prior to this position, Heather was a Project Manager with the New Jersey Health Care Talent Network and was responsible for managing the state's Southern Region Targeted Industry Partnership. She also spent four years as the Program Manager for the New Jersey Transportation, Logistics, and Distribution Talent Network. She has worked for the School of Management and Labor Relations, the Heldrich Center, and other research centers at Rutgers for 17 years. Her expertise includes researching and writing reports on industry trends; program marketing, including social media; employer development; presentations to job seekers and employers; and managing program data and information. She has a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Developmental and Educational Psychology, both from Boston College.

Michael Calabria is an accomplished finance executive with experience in various industries. Michael graduated magna cum laude from Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and summa cum laude with an MBA in Finance. Upon graduation, he worked at Price Waterhouse, one of the Big Eight public accounting firms in the United States, performing independent audits of companies’ financial statements and internal controls. He audited clients in multiple industries, including manufacturing, financial services, communication, nonprofit, mining, and real estate.

After Price Waterhouse, Michael worked for L’Oreal USA, the world’s leading beauty company in the consumer products industry. Michael started and eventually led the internal audit department. He became the first Controller of the research & development division and over time was responsible for the accounting, finance, purchasing, and facility budgets, and financial reporting. He then transferred to the operations division and oversaw the corporate operations division’s budgets and financial reporting for the Americas zone (United States, Canada, Mexico, and Latin & South America).

Before joining the Heldrich Center, Michael volunteered at the Professional Services Group of Central New Jersey (a nonprofit organization) as its Director of Finance, Membership, and Fundraising. He was a member of the executive committee, creating and executing the mission of the organization. He is actively involved in the sophomore student mentor program at the Seton Hall University business school as well as a former blood drive champion. Michael wishes to continue these volunteer efforts at Rutgers.

Joanne Hamza brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Heldrich Center. With a strong background in education and career development, Joanne has taught in the New Jersey public school systems for seven years, teaching and creating curricula for multicultural education. Holding a Master of Arts in Teaching, Joanne has also served as the statewide trainer for the New Jersey Career Assistance Navigator, a career navigation system funded by the New Jersey Department of Education that empowers students to navigate their career pathways with confidence. Over the span of eight years, Joanne honed her skills in presentations and creating workshops, including presenting at the New Jersey Education Association’s annual convention for educators and staff.

Currently, Joanne serves as the Mentorship Program Coordinator on the Heldrich Center’s Certified Home Health Aide project in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Human Services. She is spearheading efforts to facilitate meaningful mentorship experiences for aspiring professionals in the healthcare sector. With a strong passion for empowering others to succeed, Joanne’s unique blend of educational experience, career guidance, and presentation skills, coupled with her current role as a Mentorship Program Coordinator, makes her a valuable resource in the field of workforce development

Robb C. Sewell is Assistant Director of Communications and Public Relations at the Heldrich Center. He has over 25 years experience in editing, grant and collateral writing, web and visual development, event planning and management, publication development and production, project management, media relations, and social media. Prior to joining the Heldrich Center in October 2004, he managed communications at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of four plays, a novel, multiple short stories, and an array of research briefs and e-magazine articles. Additionally, he is an adjunct professor of public relations at Drexel University and an adjunct professor of career explorations at Rutgers University.

He received a B.A. in English from Rutgers University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Rosemont College, where he was honored for outstanding writing.

Benjamin Shen is the Systems Administrator at the Heldrich Center and is responsible for maintaining, automating, and optimizing the data ingestion processes for the New Jersey Statewide Data System (NJSDS). He is also responsible for extending NJSDS to provide a user-friendly means of accessing de-identified data while maintaining data security. In addition, he has extensive experience in supporting large data environments comprised of disparate sets of data. He is a member of Rutgers University's graduation class of 1993 with degrees in Computer Science and Psychology.

Bernadina Smiley has worked for the Heldrich Center for 22 years, starting in December of 1998. She now holds the position of Accounting Coordinator. She received her Master of Labor and Employment Relations degree from Rutgers University. She also received a Bachelor of Science degree in Management/Human Resources from Park University. Bernadina has held many positions for various departments at Rutgers University, including Head Accounting Clerk, Principal Accounting Clerk, Senior Clerk, and Principal Bookkeeper. Prior to working at Rutgers University, she worked for many corporations in New York, including The Hearst Corporation and W-G Vinyl Corporation as an Accounts Payable Assistant.
